TLDR: Mission configuration is not qualitatively random; you will see several stable patterns 80% of the time.

Story: As a Point Extraction player, the most frequent PE7 mission I see after the recent major patch is PE7 in Hollow Bough. I’ve noticed that distribution of other modes also degraded. For instance, you’ll see a couple of 200/225 Mining Expedition most of the time (forget 250, 325, and 400; they are quite rare now). I think the same is true for all modes.

The main reason for such a condition is, of course, the introduction of the new mode. The number of slots is limited, and a considerably large part of it now’s been taken from older modes by Deep Scans. But if we look further in the past, the problem was always there, just not so drastic as of now. I can say that in the recent couple of years I’ve seen no more than a couple of dozen PE10 games in Glacial Strata. Usually it was single PE7 in this region, and it’s been so for many years. Now, with Deep Scans, even PE7 in Glacial Strata became a rare guest.

How to fix?

I think the most obvious and simple fix is to just increase the total number of slots / number of slots per active region. But because of the absence of PE10 in Glacial Strata (and maybe a lot of similar problems in other modes), I’m convinced that the issue is much deeper, and there’s some bug in the random distributor that leads to some fallback conditions, so I see the same combinations over and over.

I’m not expecting GSG to fix it in any time since they work on other games; the problem only affects veterans, and the problem itself is quite intricate. However, if I would ever fix this, I would possibly just start with increasing slots to mitigate the problem.
