Both were Ronaldo’s sidekick and then stepped out of his shadow to replace him almost completely, but Rooney had more goals and Benzema had strange seasons where he missed a lot.

The other difference is that Rooney became the main man immediately after Cristiano left, especially from 2010 to 2012 when he didn’t have Van Persie yet. For Benzema, it took a little more, but when he did, he was an animal.

well the 16-18 Benzema is not a fair point to compare, 16-17/ 17-18 he was so bad, but 18-19 was good (after Ronaldo’s departure)

What are these arbitrary dates? Well all know Benzema 15 should have been illegal. Google ‘Benzema 15’ to find out more.

    Rooney.

    Nigh on complete player.

All the skill but on top of that, a tenacity that you don’t often see. He’d lose the ball, get up, tear back, slide tackle and start the attack again. Long balls, short one-twos and unreal strength and power.

Agreed, definitely underrated by some. Catches some flack I guess for being the talisman of Manchester United and many people not liking the club. Rooney is 3rd all time in Premier League goals and 3rd all time in assists (although will he surpassed by De Bruyne imminently) - to be top 5 in both is one hell of an achievement.

His prime playing for England was difficult, if you look at the quality of his teammates back then compared to them depth of talent someone like Kane is supported with now, it makes sense.

Well, it’s kind of unfair to compare the best version of Rooney to the worst version of Benzema.

At the age Benzema won his Ballon d’Or, Rooney retired after playing in MLS and EFL for years.

Also different players peak at different times. Both Rooney and Benzema were far better than the vast majority of footballers at the age of 16-20.

The big difference is that Rooney remained great in his 20s and then completely fell off, while Benzema was okay-ish (if by okay-ish you mean being a starter for Real Madrid) in the age most players typically peak (27-31). But Benzema around 30-35 was once again far better than almost all (sometimes actually all) his colleagues, while Rooney was just a ghost of his former self. Rooney is only 2 years older than Benzema, but he has left United since 2017. Big Benz was Madrid’s starting striker up until some months ago.

Imagine the beast rooney would have been if he took care of himself properly. Not that easy with mental health issues though.
