Maybe this is just a hot take and I’m being a moron, but I’ve been thinking - Is Ange’s popularity almost entirely based on the fact that he’s a native English speaker? Australia is so culturally similar to us and they speak the same language so it’s so much easier to be relatable and let your personality shine through in that context.
Similarly, other managers like Arteta and Klopp try using sarcasm and it’s usually a coin flip whether or not someone gets it or thinks they’re being an arrogant, condescending arsehole.
It defo has a part to play, we don’t have many English managers managing the top clubs so this is the next best thing
But also he is genuinely a very likeable guy, I get it it’s Spurs but I really liked him at Celtic I can’t pretend to think he’s a twat all of a sudden 😂
It’s the usual media thing of building someone up then knocking them down. The only time they go straight for the jugular is if someone is perceived as a really bad appointment (and then if they’re wrong it’s a redemption arc).
Just ignore the media, it’s all BS.
Pretty sure if Iraola called people mate we’d like him.
Also, Eddie Howe’s a native English speaker and he’s a colossal ringpiece
He is likeable imo because of his demeanour and calm outlook. The only reason he is hated here because he is a spurs manager. Nth to do with him as a person. If he was managing Brighton or Brentford, ppl would here would be “big Ange this and that”.
I definitely feel so. I also think it’s more for the Aussies than Americans. I just think back to the way the media treated the likes of Kewell and Cahill, compared to any of the foreign players at that time, including Henry.
No. do American coaches have an advantage or do they get taken less seriously. He’s just a charismatic person and the underdog. People preferred Arteta and Klopp when they were underdogs too.
