Just had an Xfinity tech tell us that port forwarding can no longer be done on the residential modems. Even though app has an option for it, it just doesn’t work apparently. They said however that we could put the modem in bridge mode and then plug it in to a personal modem that I could then port forward on. This doesn’t make sense as surely I would still have to open my port through Xfinity. I would appreciate some advice and if it does work recomendations for a cheap but decent secondary modem.

You’d put the Xfinity modem router in bridge mode and connect your own router

Yes, port forwarding will work on the router. The Xfinity box will be acting as a modem only, so will forward all traffic to the router and it’s up to the router to do everything else.
