I was just watching videos of Zidane in the 2006 World Cup and the composure of him and the vision and dribbling was superb. Just to think is there any players that currently plays like him now ? I think the closest was Pogba

    No one, really cannot think of a single player that reminds me of Zidane. As this is a role simply does not exist in football anymore.

    Zidane was a maestro, the job was to give him the ball and let him control your offense like a general. He had complete freedom on the pitch as he didn’t press, cover passing lanes or make off the ball dummy runs. Players simply don’t have that kind of freedom anymore.

    Since Zidane, I think the closest player to him was Mesut Özil. I can also see Pogba had a rather similar skillset but he never had Zidane’s role on the pitch.

      Ozil was my favorite player and I hated when he went to Arsenal. But yeah he’s probably the most similar to Zidane in playstyle and position.

      Don’t think he was ever really like Zidane, but that is what Grealish did when he was at Villa

      I agree. Perhaps I’d disagree about Özil, because Zidane was more of a controller, as you said, but, again, there aren’t really players today who take up that kind of role. Football changed too much.

      However, when it comes to having that je ne sais quoi of dominating the game on a good day and rising to the occasion at an important match, perhaps Modric would be my pick. He doesn’t carry and coordinate the offense, but he distributes the ball and dictates tempo like nobody else today.

      Perhaps if we threw Özil and Modric into a blender?
