As title suggests; upgrading from haswell & gtx 970 -> raptor lake & rtx 4070.
Dont plan to upgrade for another 5+ years at least. worth going the i7 route in this case? Mainly doing gaming, video editing & 3d modelling (hobbyist - not professional).
Not really fussed about meteor lake & 14th gen raptor lake doesn’t seem totally worth it for the price. With black friday deals I can build the i7 rig for as much as I was gonna pay for the i5. It’s just debating whether i want to save that 100…
Also thought about putting the money towards a better GPU, but 4070ti is barely a step up for £200 extra and the 4080 is a no go (not going AMD old habits die hard lol), so that’s that.
Would love to hear some thoughts on this as i’ve been out of the PC loop for some time! Thx in advance.
I would say go with the i7-13700k if you really need more cores for video editing and 3d modeling otherwise either one works.
Strangely I was in your situation few weeks ago about same bulid then finally settled for 13600k and rtx 3070 that what was in my budget at the time and gave my gtx 970 to my bro and build him new PC with 13500 and ddr5 6000 MHz and what’s really funny now they released 14 gen after I built both PC and now the prices are dropping and I bought the 13600k for 410 USD and 13500 for 245usd and used rtx 3070 for 329 usd
I went from i5-13600k to i7 13700k. And I absolutely suggest the i7. Just more stable and hit my sweet spot. Go for i7
14700k given extra core & little increases clock speed than 13700k.
Hi everyone, thanks for the advice. People are largely telling me to go for the 14700k, i feel it’s overkill for my uses, though.
I’ve decided to go with the i5 chip due to a few of the answers here; for context, I’ve been a student for the past 5 years (hence the no-upgrade for 7 years) and so a long upgrade path to me seems normal (which i understand is not the norm).
Now i have a decent job out of my masters; I’ll probably be able to afford upgrades on a more frequent basis (not 5+ years lol). My current budget suits the i5 and 4070 combo best. Believe me, if i had an extra £300 kicking around, i would totally have gone with the 14700k and 4070ti.
Maybe next time, folks, i will get the better upgrade. Appreicate all the comments on this (even the ones telling me not to be stingelord, which made me chuckle). Maybe not have convinced me to upgrade this time, but i will certainly be reviewing my build after a couple of years now.
Best, Sam
