Hi all, I recently bought my first enclosure. I’ve been looking at SSDs on Amazon but I’m not sure what to go with. Can anyone recommend a good 20TB SSD? I’ll be using it for Plex. Are there any good sales at the moment anywhere (I’m in Ireland, not sure where to look!). This is the enclosure I bought:

When I have a chance I’ll check to received enclosure to see if its max capacity SSD is 16 or 20TB as it mentions both in the pictures and written description!
Do you know how much theyd cost? Lmao
Sering refurbished 20TB ones for just over €200 on Serverpartdeals.com. Would they be reliable?
How… the hell are you finding 20TB SSDs for that price? 15TB ones are like $1k lol
Lol, going by some of the responses I’m getting I think I’m using the wrong term 😅 this is an example of what I’m talking about: https://serverpartdeals.com/products/seagate-exos-x20-st20000nm007d-20tb-7-2k-rpm-sata-6gb-s-3-5-recertified-hard-drive
That’s an HDD, much cheaper (like 5~6x) for the capacity than SSDs.
It’ll work fine. As for 16 vs 20TB you most likely don’t have to worry about it. Usually those “limits” exist because drives larger than 16TB didn’t exist at the time, or they existed but the manufacturer didn’t bother certifying.
The only actually limit for something like this is 2TB. If it says it can do more then it has no effective limit.
Thanks very much, it’s making more sense to me now!
I believe you are confusing HDD’s (mechanical hard drive) with SSD’s (solid state hard drives). As far as I know, there aren’t any 20TB SSD’s in existence unless it’s a rare enterprise model and they would be extremely cost prohibitive (like, 10’s of thousands of dollars for that capacity).
Anyways, if you’re looking for large capacity drives, you can either buy a Western Digital external and use it’s native enclosure or I always recommend https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/hard-drives as a place to shop for high capacity drives at a decent price. Do note, I linked to the HDD page. You can find SSD’s at this link for price reference: https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/solid-state-drives
As an additional point of reference, I use the Seagate EXOS X16 and 18’s here for my Plex and backup drives. https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/hard-drives?sort=price-ascending&pf_t_brand=brand%3ASeagate&pf_t_brand=brand%3AHGST&pf_t_brand=brand%3AToshiba&pf_t_brand=brand%3AWestern+Digital&pf_t_capacity=capacity%3A18TB&pf_t_capacity=capacity%3A16TB&pf_t_capacity=capacity%3A14TB&pf_t_interface_type=interface%3ASATA
Do you really need an SSD if there is only you watching things?
I can happily stream off a single NAS HDD to three users without straining things!
I’m an idiot. Thought HDDs were just the standard standalone hard drives that didn’t require an enclosure! So yeah, it’s HDDs I should be looking for 🫠
