Im confused, how did it take so long for long ball to become so irrelevant? When I watch games from 2003 every team just lobs the ball up over and over.

    It’s really not irrelevant.

    Arteta has completely changed his approach by switching to Raya in goal and 6’4" Havertz lurking about and lumping the ball up.

    Watch how often City used Haaland last season to isolate our central defenders by knocking it long to him.

    Liverpool have been using VVD and TAA to play long diagonal balls to the wingers for years.

    The only thing that’s now irrelevant is the term “long ball”. It’s pure snobbery, but when teams do it now, it’s “direct passing”…
