I have been running my home network for 8 years without issue. Then around 11:30PM on Saturday, i got a notification that my SmartThings home hub had disconnected. Didn’t think anything of it until Sunday when I noticed my MyQ Garage Hub also was also no longer connected.
The Samsung Hub is plugged into an Unmanaged PoE switch (Switch 1) that plugs into the Router along with a PoE camera that was unavailable thru the app. The MyQ Garage Hub is plugged into another unmanaged switch (Switch 2), that plugs into the router was also showing Offline. The Router also has a wired AP Access point (Another Router that is in AP mode) that has some Wireless Camera’s which were online.
Any device that was in either Switch 1 or 2, showed lights flashing on the Ethernet ports, but could not be pinged OR available from the apps on my phone. Started messing around troubleshooting and after I unplugged Switch 2, everything on Switch 1 would work as well as everything that was connected to the AP.
I ordered a new unmanaged switch to replace Switch 2, since I thought that Switch 2 went bad. After I plugged Swtich 2 into the Router, everything on Switch 1 could connect for about 30 seconds and then would show offline (no camera or Smartthing Hub).
I am not sure what is going on, since I did not update Router Firmware or make any changes to the network for months and now it seems that I can’t plug two switches into the router. Any ideas of what else I can try?
Did something get plugged in that connected switch 1 and 2 directly, i.e. other than through the router’s switch? If you unplug one of the switches from the router does everything, including the stuff on the unplugged switch, start to work?
I have seen your symptom when switches not running STP are connected in a loop. Since ethernet loops never stop shutting everything down is the only fix.
I don’t think so. I was literally sitting on the couch when everything crapped out and hadn’t plugged anything in, in over 2 years.
