Hi all, I’m getting a 75mbps plan from xfinity, seems like I should get my own modem and router.
I live in a one bedroom, and my usage would not heavy. Watch streamings, youtube, zoom calls, maybe some ps4 online games. Most of the connections will be through wifi.
Which modem and router would be the most bang for the buck?
I was looking at ARRIS Surfboard SB6183 Cable Modem (amazon), and apparently I will need a router for the wifi, so was looking at TP Link AX1800 Wifi 6 Router (amazon).
By saying “future proof” I meant if I get a roommate in the future with similar usage, would the recommended device still do the job well?
- Is wifi 6 necessary?
- What would be the capacity of the modem and router for future proof?
Thanks for your time, hope you have a great day.
The router will be great, you’ll have to upgrade the modem long before you have to deal with the router.
As for the modem, that’s probably the bare minimum I’d get to be confirmable saying it’d work for 2 people. I can’t find Comcast’s compatibility list in a quick glance, but Cox supports that modem on plans up to 250 Mbps - this will likely support you staying in the lowest tier for quite a while.
Faster speeds than that are only really useful for the impatient, who don’t want to wait for big downloads (like new games/updates), or for big families who do a ton of streaming. If you’re not anticipating either of those in the next 5 years, the $50 spent on that modem will not be lost.
you should be fine on that router.

Fakespot analyzes the reviews authenticity and not the product quality using AI. We look for real reviews that mention product issues such as counterfeits, defects, and bad return policies that fake reviews try to hide from consumers.
We give an A-F letter for trustworthiness of reviews. A = very trustworthy reviews, F = highly untrustworthy reviews. We also provide seller ratings to warn you if the seller can be trusted or not.
Scroll thru this sub for some recommendations, but DO NOT get a D3.0 modem! ISPs are phasing them out, and Xfinity probably won’t even let you add it to your account.
Check out the Arris SB8200 or the S33.
And check with your ISP (they have a supported modem list on their website) before you buy anything…
