This is the first shelf I’ve ever built! I’ve made a couple workbenches before but never a shelf. Hopefully the first of many we’ve got a few places around the house that need better storage
Nice enough, but I would’ve followed the stairs along the bottom shelf so it sits flush.
Railing is already there though. Probably didn’t want to change or work around it.
And IMO that’s a nice spot for one or two pairs of boots down there, and a shorter pair of shoes or slippers can go up on the step.
I was originally going to follow the stairs but decided not to for a couple reasons. I like having that extra space down there for shoes, I was already hitting the limits of what I know how to do and needed to keep the design simple, also with it like this if I move it I can make one circular saw cut and it will sit flat
I can’t tell if it is finished or not, but it looks like it will hold shoes or boots. If that’s the plan, then you’ll definitely want some sort of protection on it. Even a coat of fast drying polyurethane will help it last longer and be easier to clean.
You might also throw on a face frame, which would help prevent the front edge from sagging over time.
It is not finished currently. I don’t know anything about finishes so that was going to be a “if I get to it” problem x.x
A front edge could be good I’ve never made anything like that. I might skip that on this particular one but I have another shelf build coming up I think that would be a great idea!
I am glad to see the diversity of content in lemmy. Look nice btw.
Don’t over think the finish if this is just a functional piece.
Get a can of wipe on, water based polyurethane (any big box store). You could also prime and paint it (just like a wall). Either way, be aware of the fumes, so work in the garage if you can.
For a face frame, you could just use some strips of clear pine, about 1" wide, 1/2" thick each. Glue and nail the wide face onto the edge of the plywood all around the front (keeping the top edge flush to the top surface of the shelf).
Looks good to me, may seem a bit cheeky but if it works for the purpose it was built for then that’s fine in my book.
So far it’s working perfectly! I get home, throw a bunch of random pocket trash on it, then go by later to sort it out
Looks great!
Looks brilliant to me! Very creative and very useful!
Looks nice! Although I would recommend to make a diagonal beam or back plate connecting the left bottom plate to the rest. It makes the construction much stronger.
Ooh, I’ve got a back plate on the rest of it not sure why I didn’t think to put an extra support on the leg part
Your house must be tiny and awful for this to be an optimal solution. And that’s coming from me, living in an apartment with fucking baseboard heaters.
Bit presumptuous calling my house awful, I rather like my place. The entryway specifically is awkward. I wanted an entryway shelf to put random stuff on when I get home
No need to be shitty.
What’s wrong with baseboard heaters?
With the wide variaty of flavors out there, why did you pick salty…
