Who’s your favourite '80s pop star or group?
The '80s are a decade that doesn’t always get the respect it deserves.
So, after a recent discussion on @popheads, I’ve decided to reach out and see who some of your favourites are, and why?
I’ll kick off the thread with Janet… Ms. Jackson, if you’re nasty.
Why?
This speaks for itself:
It’s strange there is a belief that eighties music doesn’t get the respect it deserves.
I think back to performers like Tina Turner, Prince, Dire Straits, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston and to bands like U2, Blondie, The Beltanes, AC/DC,…
There was some awesome music and many are still household names greatly respected around the world.
Anyway, Simple Minds and Runrig are a couple of bands who provided (some of) the soundtrack to my young adult life.
Duran Duran - over the top sound that was truly unique. Lyrics that were sometimes confusing but always beautiful.
These guys had style.
basically the pretty in pink soundtrack, if i’m being honest
@pootriarch @ajsadauskas The Cure
early - The Cars
late - REMso many more, but these stand out to me because recently I’ve been thinking neither get the respect and love they deserve
Probably Depeche Mode. I’m a sucker for synthpop and they’re one of the essential acts in that genre. Just Can’t Get Enough is an iconic track and I appreciate how they went for darker songwriting during their career. Never Let Me Down Again is also a great track. They would go on to influence some of my favourite synthpop acts too, namely CHVRCHES.
@ajsadauskas @popheads @music Omd, Pet shop boys, eurhythmics
@ajsadauskas @popheads Tears For Fears and Howard Jones - they‘re so great in composing.
@ralfobeck @ajsadauskas @popheads in case you don’t know the Seeds of Love & Songs From the Big Chair was remixed & re-released.
Steven Wilson was the artist behind the desk.
