Giving Russia anything for it is tatamount to paying a ransom. It would only encourage Russia to invade again in a decade or less. Russia turning around and giving up the territory without gaining anything is just accepting complete defeat. They won’t do that. So it’s a battle of attrition, both morale and economic.
