It seems like the current consensus is they are shipping a decent BOM, but brace for potential wire breaks in the future.

Wire quality is likely the cause, but it will inevitably happen in a cable chain. For wires in cable chain, wire strand (more = better) and insulation material (PRFE = pretty good, PVC = meh) are the things that matter.
