I’m new to watching football and now genuinely very curious and confused after Spurs vs Chelsea match the offside rule.
Why is Chelsea’s second goal not an offside? It seems to me when Sterling passed the ball to Jackson, Jackson was in an offside position. https://youtu.be/j1-8N0Q5-Uw?si=jOE4Utexk_m0F91X&t=528
The same thing also happened with Chelsea’s third goal. https://youtu.be/j1-8N0Q5-Uw?si=jOE4Utexk_mOF91X&t=600
Am I missing something with this offside rule here?
There are two ways you can be onside. 1. Be further from the goal than the 2nd to last defender 2. Be behind the ball when it is passed
Both players ahead of last defender and Jackson is behind the ball
Maybe the play is occurring too quickly for you to notice because these players are playing off the shoulder of the defense. The offside rule is that you must be either behind two opposition players when the ball is passed to you ( almost always one of those players is the goalie) or you are behind the ball (a back pass). Those are the primary ways a player is offside.
Those players you highlighted were just in line with a defender when the ball was passed into space.
