Under appreciated by young fans?(under 20 or so)

I’ve noticed some young (Ronaldo) fans who call Henry a “Pace Merchant” or that he only had pace and was a average striker etc… usually between the ages of 10-13/14

Is Thierry Henry becoming under rated recently? Or is this just noise from CR7 or Tottenham Fanboys.

Super talented player far more than a pace merchant. He had tremendous balance, touch was great, good vision, flair and creativity. His finishing curling from left to right when he passed it in was as good as I’ve seen. Strong and could mix it with big defenders when in the mood. Wonderful dribbling and close control especially for a guy his size.

You don’t top score in two title winning teams without being a great striker. Henry alongside Alan Smith are only Arsenal players to do this.

Henry is not without weakness. He was a giant homer scoring 66% of his goals at Highbury. Massively underwhelmed in knockout champions league games scoring 6 in 18, flooped in cup finals 0 in 10. His record away against man utd, Chelsea, spurs and Liverpool is abysmal compared to his home record 6 vs ~26. Won the golden boot in 05/06 scoring seven of twenty eight away from home. Henry was an poor leader and captain his team without Vieira 05/06 lost nine games away more then they lost with Vieira over the previous four seasons! His attitude away from home was often poor almost Mesut Ozil esq as he barely broke a sweat or had convenient injuries to miss tough trips before a Lazarus recovery for a home game. He was capable of working his nuts off as shown in Europe that as he ran himself ragged as lone striker what a disgrace he didn’t show the same effort away at Blackburn that he did at Madrid. We match going fans deserved better than seeing a preening pouting lazy turd we got in far too many domestic aways towards the end.

Henry is the most overated player in the sports history imo amongst English speakers.

I grew up watching him, he was a phenomenal striker but people particularly British people under 30 put him on a pedestal his performances just didn’t warrant and group him with much better players who achieved much more in the game.

It’s Nostaliga as Henry was in his pomp when a lot of young people got into the game

Personally I ignore people’s opinions who were not even alive to see said player they are commenting on.

If you’re getting upset about the opinions of 13 year olds on Tik Tok it’s a sign you really need to touch some grass.

United fan since mid 90s and even though I hated him because he was in Arsenal, it was an absolute joy to watch him play… very few football players have a legacy that plays through generations and across the world… Pele, Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Zidane and maybe 8-10 more that I’m too lazy to type here… beyond them, the other players will have a legacy that carries on within their clubs and some others that last through the generation of fans that watched them and that’s it. You can’t get upset because some kids who’ve been watching the game for five years don’t appreciate sometime that they didn’t even watch playing

When somebody else hits 20 goals and 20 assists in a season we’ll open the conversation. Until then…

Liverpool fan, and honestly I use to love watching him play every week. Easily the best striker in the Premier league era

People appreciate players that they can often see, nothing new tbh.

For example we can never appreciate how excellent, say, George Best, compared to Antony which is the best player ever

    Young people forget old people.

Henry has been retired as long as Pele was when I started watching football.

If it was people who watched his peak - his Barcelona days do not do him full justice - that’s different.

But you’re talking about people who were kids when he played. Videos and stats only tell half the story without the context of the circumstances at the time.

A time will come where people look at Messi and Ronaldo the same way we look at Puskas, Eusebio and Di Stefano

Can’t speak for other Tottenham fans but as much as I hated how prolific he was for Arsenal, not for a second would I think of knocking his talent. He was an amazing player and I can only wish he had played for us and not them. I could say I was jealous of Arsenal for having such a player but never in a million years would I say he was anything but a great one. It’s okay to hate a rival player for being brilliant, it’s another thing to pretend he was not. Something the Harry Kane haters never understood.

I mean I started watching football ~99-00 and only watch live games. If you ask me about Cantona or pele or Maradona or … I know squat at the same time I won’t disrespect them. They were before my time at that’s as much as I know about them. If I haven’t watched them play I say I have no openings as I have not watched them play. I know about them from the half time shows and people’s references to them during commentary but other than that no opinion.

FIFA has ruined younger peoples perception of football.

Young guys in my work constantly wondering how Haaland can lose a foot race against defender X

“He must be injured or something”

Because in fifa he’s got 999 pace… and you can see the fifa wheels spinning in Their mind

Same reason you get younger fans thinking Zidane was shit and Cruyff was better because he had better technique…

coming from 17/18 year olds who never seen either play.

Ps. Not saying Cruyff was shit, just them talking about it as if they had any clue, I only seen Zidane but he’s my personal goat.
