This post is obviously inspired by today’s game (wtf was that??), but what are the games that truly amazed you, even if your favorite time team didn’t play? Let me start with several examples, some of which are not from the EPL:
- Man Utd 4:3 Man City (2009) - an insane encounter and it always felt United couldn’t win, but they did, and that Owen goal was awesome!
- Netherlands 2:3 Czech Republic (EURO 2004) - if you didn’t watch this one, you should! Robben still had hair and it was one of the most magnificent games of football I’ve ever seen!
- Alaves 4:5 Liverpool (UEFA Cup Final 2001) - I’ve never thought I would be that heartbroken for a team I’ve never watched before!
- Milan 3:3 Liverpool (the Miracle of Istanbul) - obviously.
- Crystal Palace 3:3 Liverpool (2014) - Liverpool went 3 up and decided they should try to erase a -8 goal difference to catch Man City. They paid the price, but damn, the game was worth watching!
- Blackpool 4:3 Bolton Wanderers (2011) - omfg, Ian Holloway’s Blackpool were entertaining as fuck, how I wish they stayed for at least another season … this game is probably my favorite from a season that featured a bunch of great matches.
Man United 4-3 Real Madrid in 2003. The first leg wasn’t too bad either
Man City 4-3 Spurs in the Champions League Quarter Final.
Incredible game, plus the look on Pep’s face when Sterling’s goal was disallowed was priceless.
Brazil vs Germany in Brazil has to be one of the best. The cuts to the crowd made it even better.
Wolves Vs City 3-2 in 2019. Adam Traore really said “fvck it, I’ll do it myself” and absolutely clutched the game singlehandedly
Chelsea vs Tottenham securing the league for Leicester City.
Because I dont think its been mentioned the 2nd leg of Spurs v City in the UCL QF was great lol and I don’t even like Spurs
Cameroon - Denmark (1-2) WC 2010
If there ever was a game to fit the description “end to end stuff”, it was this one.
Neither team had any interest in defending, and just threw everything forward throughout the entire game!
To try and pick one I haven’t seen in the comments
Reading 5-7 Arsenal was a hell of a game
All of Uruguays last 3 games in the 2010 WC (vs Ghana, Netherlands and Germany). The Ghana game was the most entertaining snooze fest ever. And Forlan almost carrying Uruguay against heavyweights back then like Netherlands and Germany
A few seasons ago when city won the league. There was a period of two weeks where they played Tuchels Chelsea and got a 1-0 win then went to Liverpool and I think they won 2-1. They still stick in my mind as my favourite two weeks of football, we beat Sp*rs in the derby in a great game, I seem to remember a wolves match that was a blinder, but those two performances from City were extra ordinary. Super tight, tactical affairs, played at such a crazy high intensity. Gabi with an incredible performance and winner against Chelsea and Foden balling out against Liverpool. Peak Prem football.
Liverpool 2 - 1 Leicester, where Liverpool won without scoring a goal
Someone is remembering Netherlands vs Czech Republic from 2004 EURO? Dont mind best football games … this is one my favourites reddit posts.
How could you forget! One of my favorite games of all time, such a joy to watch both team going for it from the first minute to the every last.
Ajax beating both Real Madrid and Juventus in the 2018/19 UCL (and their games against Bayern in the group stage were solid too.)
Preparing to be crucified as a Man United fan
But Liverpool vs City 4-3 back in 2018.
I watched the match with my brother and his friends who are all Liverpool fans (we are in Australia so it was a late night for us).
The attacking prowess of Salah, Firmino and Mane in their prime was box office, and to see City come storming back into the game almost on demand was a truly entertaining experience.
Chelsea v spuds the year Leicester city won the league and Chelski kept spuds from contending.
