Norway had several chances of qualifying for the Euros but they never lived up to their expectations. Haaland is the best striker in the world and Odegaard is a top midfielder and captain, for both the national team and one of the best teams in the Premier League. Norway is still managing to feed Haaland, with an insane 27 goals. What gives, terrible tactics or synergy issues?

Gareth Bale got Wales to the semi finals of the Euros and qualified for a World Cup.

International football is not club football, great players can carry terrible teams and managers very far.

Haaland & Odegaard bottled it 🤷‍♀️

Taking Bale, Haaland, and Odegaard out of the conversation, that Wales team had better players than this Norway team.

I don’t think that’s fair. If you’re taking Odegard out of the conversation, you have take Ramsey out too. That said, Wales still had a better team. Joe Allen was better than Norway’s third best player. Williams and Hennessey were also good players. Norway really doesn’t have the depth of quality that Wales had 10 years ago.

Norway’s third best player is Ostigard, who starts for the Serie A holders Napoli

Haaland is a different kind of player. He doesn’t create much himself, he just scores most chances he is given. Put him in a shit team and he is shit too.

Bale is much more a creator. Give him the ball and something will happen.

Yep and that isn’t a slight on Haaland either. You need those players that rely on the creativity of others. Someone who converts the majority of their chances is massively important for a team. As a Chelsea fan I appreciate that a lot because it’s the one thing that’s been holding us back recently. Lewandowski was the same. Unbelievable at club level where his job was to convert the chances the team created for him, more underwhelming at international level because he didn’t have the quality around him to shine. You just have to remind yourself of what a realistic expectation is for those mind of players.

Its 11 players, and a team game… sure two world class players can make a difference, but there is so much more to football. Norway has no real culture playing football, even if Rosenborg have had some success also, it is to far off and that combined with some bad luck / decisions. They cannot just trust that these two players should be the win con, they must be better tactical.

haaland consistently skips out on international duty.

odegaard can only do so much after that.

this international breakthrough odegaard skipped and likewise only so much norway can do without a word class mid

Odegaard has played for six [6] professional teams; he has only delivered in 1 of them. People calling him “one of the best in the world”, clearly only watch Premier League. He is superb with Arsenal, but as a Real Madrid, Vitesse, Real Sociedad and Norway national team player, he is subpar. I watched him when Norway faced Spain [a real opponent]: lost in the field, unable to driblble or link up to Haaland/Sorloth.

Erling is one of, if no the best player in the world, no doubt. He has proved himself again and again. Football sometimes has this kind of things: Sweeden had its most recen success…right when Ibra wasnt playing for them.

Going off Norway’s instagram; I genuinely think Ståle Solbakken likes the sound of his own voice and is just there for the good vibes.

Completely disagree. But Norway has a terrible goalie, and pretty rubbish defence as well. That doesn’t help

I think their keeper has been decent for Sevilla this year. He was injured and didnt play today.

Maybe he’s been decent for Sevilla, but he’s been rubbish for Norway for years and years. Think most people are shocked that he’s actually playing for Sevilla tbh.

Terrible defense? Then it must be a manager problem.

        Aursnes - Østigård - Ajer - Ryerson

That should be more than good enough to qualify to a tournament where half the teams qualify.

We have had a bad national team for 20 years. We had some good generations but they cant do it on the pitch. Some players over the years seems to have permanent place on the team even if the dont play/bad form on clubteam (Stefan Johansen, Stefan Strandberg, Markus Henriksen). Right now we lack GK and defence… and it seems like a mental problem for our players. We miss out every time. Biggest disappointment in football this century for me. I feel every manager is the same. Its the same old story. Same excuses… We haven’t been in a championship since Euro 2000…

I mean, yeah that’s how it works. You need a team and a great manager. Sweden has Isak, Kulusevski, Forsberg and Lindelof and crashed out not even remotely close in a all things considered very easy group.

Meanwhile much “lesser” teams get through. You need 11 and you need tactics. Simple (but not easy)
