Ah man, such sad news. I’ll always remember him leading England to the semis in euro 96- probably the only time in my life when we were the best team in a major tournament.

We were the best team in the most recent European Championship. We lost to Italy because we took 3 stutter step penalty kicks in a row and threw it away.

May he rest in peace and thoughts for his family and friends as they mourn.

Many happy memories of the teams he coached.

That Euro 96 England team was fantastic and is “core memory” territory. The team, the kit, and Venables at the helm. Good times. Sad to hear he’s passed

Was in my early 20s during Euro 96 the hype / atmosphere was mental. Got to see Czech Republic play too local warm up game as they stayed in my home town. England memories i will never forget great time in my life. Footy and beer gardens cant be beat. Thank you sir

“The secrets of Venables’ success as a coach are not simple, but they are straightforward. He treats his players well, he gets them to enjoy themselves and, most profitably of all, he engages their minds.”

John Gregory: He occupied your brain. Everything he did was so imaginative. In the four years I was with him, he rarely repeated coaching sessions. There was always something new, and it made going to work feel exciting. And he wasn’t a dictator. It wasn’t ‘my way or no way’. He’d throw ideas back to you and invite you to have your say.

Couldn’t believe it when I heard this. I’ve got a couple of books written by him and I’ve got to start reading them.

Was Terry the one Mourinho was the translator for ? Amazing he also managed Barca to a La Liga title. RIP

I remember the run at Euro 96 but I keep seeing El Tel called “innovative” in the articles today - can anyone give me an example of his innovations? or a link to a newspaper article that isn’t behind a paywall that has one explaned?! They all use the word but not many explain why. Am curious as I always assumed he was more of an old-fashioned manager. Thanks.
