Any money in politics is bad for democracy, especially when that money comes from the 1%. I know the cat is out of the bag, and in the short-term we must of course fight fire with fire. But reading this headline does not make me feel good about the state of democracy.
To be fair, the cat was out of the bag over 2000 years ago in both Greek and Roman democracies. Elites influencing elections through various means isn’t new. The problem is seeing this as the natural state of things, as was common in the past. This may be subjective, but I am noticing that it’s being seen more critically than a decade or two ago, in large part due to Musk’s deplorable behavior shedding a light on it.
Is it the wealth inequality that makes it bad for democracy? Normal people are not allowed to influence the political class like the wealthy? Who should democracy work for?
This is not good news, even if I want Harris to win.
Care to elaborate?
