The team that wins the throw in should have an advantage but is actually at a disadvantage in many cases as they have one less player to fight for the ball after the throw in. This constantly slows the game down.

I would say the only situation where it truly feels like a disadvantage is when it’s deep in your defensive third and there’s less space to work with. Anything closer to midfield makes it pretty simple if your teammates are actually moving.

They do have an advantage in that you cannot be offside from your own teams throw-in, but not many teams seem to make use of it.

When it’s kicked into the stands, the fans should be able to throw it back in. With the lucky fan trying to get it back to his own team. Rival fans may try to wrestle the ball away first and throw it to their player instead. If the ball doesn’t return to the pitch in 10 seconds, all of the seats in the stadium become electrified until it does.

The throw in taker gets to decide where it goes, that’s an advantage, they can go short or extra long if they have a delap regen

Embarrassing take, it’s up to you how you take advantage of a throw in. Possession is retained, there’s the added benefit of you can’t be offside from a throw in, and it free’s up space to be exploited on the opposite side. If you have a long throw specialist you can get the ball in the box and cause chaos without needing a corner or free kick.

Thank you, OP. I thought I had read the most stupid thing ever on here until your post took that crown in spectacular fashion. Congratulations.

You’re just showing yourself up. Wenger has set about trying to find a way to improve on throw ins because they are currently not giving any advantage to the team in possession in 80% of positions.

To me it’s just a simple loss of possession. Why should that give the other team such a large advantage when them regaining possession alone is an advantage? I don’t think losing the ball out of touch should be penalized severely. Other team has a good opportunity to win back possession, good enough.

At one team I played we were super cynical two seasons in a row with one coach. If we ever felt like it was a risk to pass the ball we would just hit it out for a throw in as close as possible to the opponents corner flag. Our press was intense and it often was easier to create chances from their throw in then by our own (shitty passing). Those two seasons we conceded 16 and 10 goals in a 22 matches league. Throw ins for sure be a disadvantage, if close to own goal.

I agree. They should relocate the ball to the nearest outside of the box for a dead ball situation…and have an arm wrestle. Winner takes the free kick.

Bruh. There are 10 players in the outfield, one extra can always come to receive the throw in or defend the ball from opposite team.

I think the team managers should throw it in. That would be entertaining and address one of your concerns.

What would you do to restart after the ball goes out of play? Throwins can be useful in the attacking half as you can’t be offside from one.
