I normally see the likes of Ronaldo, 2013 or Andriy Shevchenko, 2004 are rated as the most underdeserving Ballon dor winners.

I gonna get lot of hate, But its in recent years its Modric,
Dont get me wrong, He is one of the best midfielder of our generation. But It feels like they gave to him just because they didn’t want to give it to messi or ronaldo

      lol

He won the Champions League third year in a row 2018. Two months later he carried Croatia to the WC Final while stomping Argentina on their way there. Player of the Tournament and he is one of the most undeserved Ballon d’or Winners!?

If I spent the Rest of the day on the Internet i am sure I won’t find a more ridiculous take than this.

But he wasn’t the best player in the world that year? Even in the world cup he got player of the tournament but Hazard was the best player. And just because someone doesn’t think he should’ve got the Ballon D’or doesn’t mean they’re shitting on Modric or think he isn’t food. You said it yourself, won the Champions League a third year in a row. It felt like an appreciation award for everything he’d achieved in recent years rather than just that season. You shouldn’t be talking about what happened the season before or two seasons ago in a Ballon D’or discussions.

Modric did not “carry” Croatia lol that’s insane. Great player but people are treating Croatia NT like they are San Marino.

Perisic, rakitic, rebic, mandzukic, subasic, brozovic etc all good players.

I don’t necessarily think he should have won it either. That being said he was by far and clearly Croatia’s best player every single game.

The reason I agree with u/LordXavier77 is that in all the Messi/Ronaldo years, there have been better players than Modric. Xavi+Iniesta just mention the most obvious, both had better years throughout that period, than Modric did in 2018. Both in terms of individual perfomances and team-trophies. So it was political that they decided that year to exlcude Messi/Ronaldo - it would have been more deserving at many other years to give to others, for instance Iniesta in 2010, just to name the for me most obvious. They gave it to Modric because he was the best for Croatia which were the biggest overachievers at that WC. Nothing else.

In regards to the CL 2018 win, which is the main other merit mentioned besides the good Croation WC; in the whole campaign he scored once and assisted once. 0 of them where in 2018 (all the later stages). He had Casemiro and Kroos to handle the defensive/box-box duties and his main role were creating chances. He was good. But not french baloon good. In that campaign Kroos, Ramos and even Ronaldo were better. And in the league Kroos was a monster. It just seems silly that they almost solely give the trophy to the best player at the WC in WC years - there’s another throphy for that!

Why should trophies, aka team achievements count for individual awards? For me it’s not really an argument

If Ronaldo stayed at Madrid, he would’ve 100% won. Can you imagine how hard Perez would fight to get to tout a 6 time ballon dor winner and to finally overtake Messi?

Which is hilarious because people talk about Ronaldo’s goal against Juve and his noodles hair more than they talk about Modric’s Ballon D’or and his WC performance.

It was a World Cup year, mate! This competition is given much more importance than UCL or League cup or any combination of these in the Ballon d’Or votings. Modric being the player of the tournament deserved the award in my opinion. Also, didn’t he win by double the votes as Ronaldo?

In 2010 Xavi/Iniesta won WC and triplet and still were behind Messi so stop bullshitting about WC year and its importancy.

i mean, 2010 is considered a questionable ballon dor for this exact reason. a non-zero percent of people say the only reason messi won during that time period is bcus xavi and iniesta split votes.

I see this brought up a lot and it’s so annoying. I’m from Spain but Messi rightfully won the trophy that year, he was unplayable and was the best player by a MILE in that Barca side. The issue is that Xavi and iniesta are two players so their votes got split, if it was just one of them then you can argue for them winning it. Imo neither of them were even the best performer for Spain in that WC, it was either David Villa or Casillas.

I haven’t said that Messi didnt deserve trophy in 2010. I mean he didnt deserve trophy in 2023. He won WC but he wasn’t in form throughout whole season.

I got used to stupid choices of journalists ;)

Anyone who think that Ballon d’Or choices are fair and anyone who waits for that day and live it like an Oscar’s awards day (which are also bull*it by the way) is just an idiot or a kid.

How it can be fair if argentinian journalist voted for 5 players from Argentina :D

And Martinez as the best goalkeeper in the world - i think its the biggest scam :D

He won WC but he wasn’t in form throughout whole season.

He had the highest number of G/A all season (tied with Haaland). Where did that come from? Did he score 62 G/A in the WC? Didn’t he win several league trophies as well?

They didn’t win the triplet though. If Robben had scored his chance one vs one against Casillas, then Sneijder should have won. Damn you Robben :(
