The main aim of signing Ronaldo for Juventus was clearly to win the Champions league, which they didn’t achieve. I see this as the main reason why people claim Ronaldo wasn’t a good signing for Juventus. As well as him being one of the main reasons for Juventus’ economic issues.
Right player, wrong time. Two years earlier he was the fine margin between us being recurring Champions League last 4 / finalists, and winning the thing. And of course, COVID.
The nuanced take is that we should have recognised that ship had sailed, and not pushed ahead with his signing when we did. The money spent on him should have been used to buy midfielders and full-backs.
He was a fantastic player for us, but a greater cost than a benefit.
To be fair, you could have brought better players even with Ronaldo signing. I mean, Ramsey on a free? He was never going to win you UCLS.
