My last phone was a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and mostly everything was what I wanted except 3 gripes that bothered me quite a bit
- Ads in Samsung apps I remember seeing ads every time I opened Samsung pay and some other apps that I don’t remember anymore. It just seemed bizarre that would be ads in their own apps.
- Poor standby time The phone would drain quite noticeably when it wasn’t snt in use and almost felt like the phone would last about the same time irregardless of whether I heavily used the phone or I left it alone.
- Camera shutter lag This was quite infuriating. There was a noticeable lag from the time I pressed the shutter button to the actual photo being captured leading to blurry images.
I was wondering if these things have been addressed in the newest generation of Samsung flagship phones. I’ve been considering switching to the S24 from an iPhone 13 Pro sometime next year.
Regarding the ads, you can go to settings>private dns and choose private dns host name and add dns.adguard.com and save it.
That should nuke the ads.
Just be sure that if youre unable to login or access a certain site or app, disable it.
I usually keep it enabled because I can’t stand to see ads. I just disable it briefly when I need to.
Good luck.
I see. I didn’t know about this setting last time I had a Samsung phone. But I’m surprised that I don’t see more fuss being made about ads being present out of the box in $1000+ phones!
This is what I do, I have used ADB to make a dns quick setting tile, so now I can switch from the private dns to auto at the push of the tile. Just go to this post to see how to make it
S23 here, I don’t see any ads ever, 2 standby time is excellent. On cellular data and using aod, i drain a little less than 1% per hour. If i go to bed at 100% wake up 8 hours later I’ll be around 95% 3 camera assistant has the option to reduce shutter lag.
Maybe the ads showing or not is based on regions? Another comment mentioning ads in some but not all apps. Standby time sounds like an improvement for sure. Shutter lag is a bit of a disappointment. I’m not a camera expert so I just want to snap a photo whenever without worrying about lag.
I don’t use Samsung pay, so the only place I see ads is the Samsung Store. I just go straight to update apps bypassing the main screen and then I don’t see ads.
Some Samsung apps show some options regarding ads when you first open these apps. I remember the Gaming Hub app asking me if I want “Customized ads” or something, I just clicked “no”.
Thanks for your input. Standby time sounds like a quiet improvement. I recall people were suggesting turning off AOD and other features just to get better standby time on the Note 20 Ultra. Somewhat disappointing that shutter lag is still a thing even if to a lesser degree.
Ads are still there, Samsung removed it from some apps such as weather, Samsung Music but they are still there in other places, stand by time is still there, not too bad on s23 ultra, shutter lag is still there, improved a little but it’s there, hopefully it improves on s24 ultra which is coming in January. I would wait for that before switching
I see. Thank you for your input. I’m surprised all those things are still there…Although I do miss the expansive screen and the software that takes advantage of that space
There’s a new setting where you can prioritize capture speed vs optimization. If you put quality optimisation at minimum, the shutter lag is gone.
I see. Is there a noticeable difference in picture quality for someone who isn’t a camera expert by any means nor have multiple camera systems to compare with
I tried at night and it was fine I didn’t notice anything worse.
Except (build) quality control issues, at least in indian region (your experience in your region may vary), you won’t have to worry about anything else you have mentioned.
can’t say about the ads in samsung apps
I use the S23 ultra, it can get though the full day, standby with screen off doesn’t take up much battery. e.g. charged to 100%, woke up after 8 hours, phone is at 93-95%
shutter lag is still a thing, you have to go into certain settings to prioritize speed over quality.
- Never used samsung apps, but there are still ads for Samsung products that pop up every few months.
- The S23 finally fixed the battery life. It took them 4 years just to fix the battery issue.
- NO lags, I’m using a low end A33 phone and it’s pretty smooth.
Thanks for your answer! I liked using Samsung Pay so I was hoping they at least took down the ads there
I’m not sure irregardless is a real word. What’s wrong with regardless?
Haha I’m not well versed enough in English grammar to give you an answer
